Thanks. That was fun.
I didn't know they were still making the Atom. It's very different from their early models - more power!
It reminds me a bit of the Lotus Super 7, one of which I drove in a few autocross races (thanks to a generous friend). The Lotus was really a hoot to drive, but it had little power compared to the new Atom.

That's a cool looking automobile.  Looks like it would be fun to drive.

To be perfectly honest I'm not sure the Atom, which does 0-100 in under 6 seconds, would be very safe for an old codger like me.

I always liked the idea of a kit car, but I also always knew my mechanical skills were way below what was needed to build one. Of course, seeing one on TV was a treat.

Thank you. I enjoyed every moment of it. The driver obviously had a lot of experience with that track; he knew every turn that was coming up.

You didn't have the advantage of a misspent youth. Watching that made me feel 23 years old again.

I certainly wouldn’t go barreling down a track at 200 mph without SOME idea what lies ahead.

I think it was Mario Andretti that said "If everything seems to be under control, it means you're not going fast enough".

This morning i was pondering the 200 mph tire.

At 200 mph it rotates at what RPM? What are the centrifugal forces at that rotation? When it corners, it holds a one ton(?) car along a curving arc. That’s got to be some major side force too. All while holding the rim. Are racing tires filled with air? Some other gas?

Are dragster slicks solid rubber?

Modern hypercars are amazing, but the engineering of the tires must be equally amazing.

Tires for special cars have special design and manufacturing - and special prices. The Bugatti Veyron tires are made for that car only. They can only be replaced in France, for about $70,000 (the tires are only $17,000). As to the rotation, a little math will get you that.

Dragster tires are not solid rubber.

Most extreme performance tires use nitrogen instead of air. Nitrogen does not expand with heat the way air does, and it does not leak through the sidewalls as much as air does. A lot of gear heads use nitrogen in their street tires.

It would be interesting to read up on the details.  Why is a tire job $70,000 on a Veyron? How long do they last? What are they made of, and how do they differ from your run-of-the-mill Goodyear?

What's a set of dragster slicks go for?

Your source is crap, but the fact is close. The Veyron tires will last about fifteen minutes at 250. A nice safety feature to keep you from blowing a tire is that the car runs out of fuel in about twelve minutes at that speed.

And only $70,000 to replace. Marvelous frugality.

“Insanity on wheels” indeed.

The people who buy these things don't define insanity as we do.

I don't think that is applicable when you can buy a 1.7 million dollar car with a few days income.
