NPR aired two interviews this morning about the neo-Nazi rallies in Shelbyville this weekend. The first was with an immigrant owner of a tortilla shop, who opened early so his workers could leave for home before the rally started. They feared for their own safety, in the United States of America.
The other was with a 30-year old white woman who said she was a Christian and didn't like all this multiculturalism, LBGTQ and tolerance being forced down her throat by advertisers. Said she was proud to be white, proud of her ancestry and proud of what the Confederate flag stood for (she was wrapped in one).
Harumph.
Just as much as I fault Muslim leaders for not decrying violence in the name of Islam, I also fault Christian leaders for allowing Nazis to claim Christianity protects their xenophobia.
