This 2013 movie by Denis Villaneuvre, director of “Arrival” and “Blade Runner 2049” was recommended as another mind trip.
I watched it. I was not overly impressed.
The plot is this. A guy (Jake Gyllenhall) sees a bit-part actor in a movie who looks just like him. He looks him up online and rents every movie the guy has been in. The resemblance is uncanny.
He decides to contact the actor. At first the actor is wary, fearing a stalker, then finally agrees to meet. Then things start to get weird. The guy starts stalking the actor’s pregnant wife, eventually meeting and cuddling with her. The actor starts bullying the guy, eventually forcing him to allow the actor to go away for a weekend with his unpregnant girlfriend.
All along there are little clues that things are not what they seem — the actor and the guy share many traits, but the differences between them keep shifting who has them.
In the end no pattern or resolution emerges, it’s just a series of “gotchas.”
