I'm watching a movie about gay & lesbian orthodox Hassidic Jews. It's called "Trembling Before G-d" and it's horrifying. Truly ice-cold blood in your veins horrifying.
Their religion teaches them that homosexuality is a sin, and yet they cannot change who they are. These are people who have grown up in the culture, whose whole lives have been defined by the culture. They've been immersed in the culture since they were little bitty babies.
They spend inordinate amounts of time & energy either trying to make themselves straight, or twisting Talmudic teachings to try to get around the very obvious contradictions between what they've been taught and who they are.
Many tears are shed. Many lives are torn apart. Many psychic traumas are inflicted. It's a horrific trail of shattered lives.
All because they cannot conceive what is so painfully obvious to an outsider -- that their religion is bullshit.
