Wind Chimes

So I'm sitting on my deck reading, with an oyster shell windchime over my left shoulder and a bamboo on my right, and thinking "what a lovely, delicate, soothing sound" these guys make.

Then the dogs jumped up and started barking at something. Still, it was nice for a while.

I want a set of 55" Corinthian Bells Copper Vein wind chimes.  Gorgeous!

Also $357.  Maybe after the house sells.

Ordered. It's my birthday present to myself.

Due for delivery today. Woo-hoo!

The finishing detail on these things is just astonishing, all edges beveled and polished.  And the sound!  OMG


The pipes are 2" diameter, heavy-duty 3/16" musical-instrument-grade stainless steel.  The longest pipe is 34".  I guess the 55" designation must come from how much space you need to hang them.

At night for sleeping Mrs NoCo has swapped over from rain on the roof on Alexa to wind chimes.  There are three different wind chime loops, one is high and tinkly with a dozen tiny metal tines.  One is lower, with 5 or 6 metal tubes but it bongs frenetically, as if caught in a gale force wind.

The one we like is slow, and low, and infrequent, and just the right level of relaxing for sleeping.

Our big Corinthian set is so huge that it takes a pretty good wind to set it off at all, but when one of the pipes gets bonged it rings for at least a minute, in a clear pure tone.  The five pipes make a perfect pentatonic chord, though you have to manually activate the clapper to hear all five.

There's an art store up north that sells these gorgeous powder coated metal bells, huge, maybe 12" in diameter and 2 to 4 feet in length, with a wind clapper.  Maybe made out of old scuba tanks?  When they ring it's like god's own dinner bell.

They're gawd awful expensive though, something like $400 - 600. But I covet one.

Will have to see if I can find something cheaper on the same idea.

Meanwhile, this morning I was sitting on the deck reading in the sun, enjoying my oyster shells, and Mrs NoCo was out doing something-or-other so I pulled my mirror wind chimes out of the tool shed (she hates them). I love the darting sunbeams they throw off as they twist in the sun.

Just now I was reading in the music room (got too cold on the deck) and suddenly saw something dart across my peripheral vision.  A bug? A bee?  It was big and fast moving.

Nope.  Reflections from the mirror mobile in the late afternoon sun, which this time of day, this time of year, are bounced right into my music sanctuary.
