| Moving, I ran across a photocopy of an old M.K. Brown cartoon from National Lampoon, 1972, called "Russ De La Rocca, Worm Trainer of the Americas". It had struck me as weirdly hilarious then, and still does.

| But there were no images of it online, and my photocopy was a rather poor copy. So I started looking around and found that a local publisher, Fantagraphics, had recently put out a compilation of M.K. Brown's cartoons (which appeared in NatLamp, Playboy, The New Yorker & elsewhere). The book arrived yesterday. Gotta say, she's one of my favorite cartoonists. Much of her work I'd never seen before. She does a lot of dream translations, a lot of weird puns, and a lot of just plain surreal stuff that doesn't make much sense. Reading a few pages of her wildly-different cartoons (even the styles change radically, rather like Calvin & Hobbes by Watterson) will set your head spinning in short order. A book to savor in small portions. |
