- A community theater in Sparks, NV is believed to be the first in the world to stage a version of Samuel Beckett's famous 1949 play, "Waiting For Godot," performed entirely underwater.
Their initial run, which ran only three performances of the nearly 2-hour play, was staged inside a swimming pool in the Alf Sorensen Community Center in Sparks. The audience members -- of which there were six, including family -- were seated on the bleachers above the pool and therefore had a limited view of the action. The play was divided into four sections, rather than the usual two acts, so the performers could surface and don fresh SCUBA tanks.
With the success of their initial run, the EMH Productions Theater Group hopes to move the production to an abandoned aquarium where audience members could have a better view. They are currently seeking funds for development.
