- The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says that frontal airbags saved 2,213 lives in 2012. This number has risen each year since 1998, when federal legislation mandating frontal air bags went into effect, and has now leveled out at just over 2,000 lives saved a year.

| The couple who clean our house have one of the cars with the killer air bags. When they took it to the dealer for replacement, they were told that it would be two to three months before the parts were available. The dealer then told them that they should not drive the car at all, and he provided them with a new car as a loaner - at no charge - until their car could be repaired. Pretty nice move for a car dealer.

- Honda said Robles’ car was included in multiple recalls since 2008. The company said it had mailed more than 20 recall notices over eight years to the car’s registered owners, but its records indicate the Civic was never repaired.
But Contreras said he did not remember getting notices about the recalls from Honda. |

| So it's the driver's fault? Is that what you're getting at?

| I am skeptical that airbags saved that many lives. The authorities in England were concerned about two aspects. First, it wasn't clear that airbags conferred any improvement over wearing an effective seatbelt. Second, in tests, it was demonstrated that airbags could actually be dangerous if you weren't wearing your seatbelt. I have seen videos of crash test dummies being violently ejected through the car's side window in a crash - propelled by the airbag. Therefore, in the UK, they put all the emphasis on getting seatbelts installed in all cars and persuading everybody in the car to wear them. Airbags were considered dubious optional extras. |

| I don't doubt that airbags save lives. How many is open to debate. Seat belts also save lives (and are required by law to be worn in the US).
But anecdotes show they both have problems. In 1971, I was in an accident in which I would have been killed if I'd had air bags or had been wearing seat belts.
A professor in the Computer Science department was in an accident when his daughter was driving. The car was an older Mercedes with driver-side air bag only. The daughter was uninjured; the father, who was wearing a seat belt, wound up with spinal injuries and spent the rest of his life on crutches.
It's all a crap shoot. |

The owner had at least 20 opportunities to get the airbags fixed for free. And didn't. "Fault"? Maybe not. But there is some culpability. |

| In this and other posts, you seem eager to accept the claims of a business and ignore the consumer's rights. In this case, there is no reason to assign any culpability to the owner or driver of the car. - Quote :

But Contreras said he did not remember getting notices about the recalls from Honda. It does not say that all - or any - of these recall notices were about the air bags. How do we know that the recall notices were sent to the right address? There is no reason to excuse the air bag manufacturer or Honda because of this statement. |
