On cable the other week caught an old Christopher Lee movie where he was in yellow-face, playing Dr Fu Manchu the embodiment of the Yellow Peril, seeking to conquer the white race and the world for China. Pretty silly and somewhat offensive, even for the 1960s. But it prompted me to get hold of the original books by Sax Rohmer, dating back to the 20s or 30s. Wow. Good fun, as long as you can overlook the overt racism that leaps from pretty much every page. I keep looking over my shoulder, feeling guilty.
