Not something that everybody has to worry about, but pretty funny.

The whole "smart home" concept is idiotic.

That capability has been around for many, many years: it's called a peep hole.

As to so-called "smart Homes", I don't know why someone would want to replace a perfectly good, simple, inexpensive device with an expensive, complex device that does the same thing.

I am as much a gadget freak as anyone, but there must be real benefits derived from the gadget before I care about it.

Oh come on. I don't even own a horse. Or a candle.

I bought SSDs for my computer. Something that wasn't needed but which I thought were cool. Almost doubled the cost of the computer.

I have it on good authority that the Amish shy away from SSDs.

I do.

I have bought, and burned to CD-R, probably a couple hundred albums that would be difficult-to-impossible to track down in physical form. It's quick, reliable, and price-competitive. Sound quality is never less than excellent.

Limited audio format support.
Very inflexible.
Ugly (kind of like Windows 10).
Idiotic, unnecessarily huge updates.

I guess I never thought about it. I just use it.

That's what Apple people do -- we use the products. It's only Microsoft people that obsess over colors and formats and knobs and bells and whistles. More fun than getting stuff done, I assume.

There is no such group as "Microsoft people." Don't be absurd.

I wasn't obsessing about anything, much less colors and knobs.
I mentioned audio file formats. That's very different, don't you think? For example, iTunes doesn't support .flac files. When it imports files, it just skips them without notice. Not exactly the same as bells and whistles.

How do you "get stuff done" when the program won't do "some stuff"?

I have a flac converter for when I can't find the superior AAC format.

You really think AAC is better than flac, which is lossless? AAC is smaller, not better.
If lossless isn't better, why does Apple have their own proprietary lossless format, ALAC? Which is, of course, supported by iTunes.

Why should I have to convert files to play them? I have several programs that play audio files, and iTunes is the only one that doesn't support flac.

I've never seen an ALAC file on iTunes. Apple uses AAC and AIFF exclusively, if I recall correctly.

Although my computer lets me rip to almost any format I want.

In my experience, AAC is sonically indistinguishable from "CD quality" (wav) but much more compact. When I have to start with a flac file I convert it to wav (if burning to CD-R) or AAC (if putting on a mobile device). The flac format itself is not read by too many devices to consider leaving files in that format.

Ymmd.

Btw, obsessing about file formats is a Microsoftie disease. I just find one that works and move on.

The whole "lossless" debate is a lot of mental masturbation IMO.

That may be true for the iTunes store. But the iTunes program gives you the option of ripping a CD to Apple Lossless (ALAC).

And does mine. And tens of millions of others.

That's the ticket: compact. That is the sole purpose for the creation of MP3 and AAC. And it is sonically indistinguishable from WAV or flac in most cases.

You don't need to convert the flac to WAV - the data are bit-identical, only the wrapper is different.

are absolute bullshit. You should read the Apple users forums sometime.
