Reminiscent of the laptop batteries catching fire some years ago.

Lithium ion batteries are very dangerous items. The manufacture, storage, shipping, and care of the batteries must be handled very, very carefully.

Speaking of iPhones and batteries. Yesterday, I noticed that my iPhone was showing one percent charge. I plugged it into the charger and when the charging icon popped up it showed forty-five percent charged. It has only been about a month since I last let the battery get low enough to turn off the phone, for calibration of the charge-level program. Typically, the phone would turn itself off at around five percent.
I think I may have a dying battery (or battery-connected circuit).
Shit!
There's another seven hundred bucks down the toilet.

You either have extremely bad karma or you're very hard on your toys.

Or I have reached the expected end of life for the device.

Ho-hum. Apple hasn't designed a new product -- much less a new category of products -- since Steve died.

That's because fucking Tim Cook is an MBA instead of an engineer, and he spends all of his capital -- financial as well as intellectual -- making rich people richer.

Apple has done well thus far without ever having an engineer as CEO.

Lest anyone think that my last remark was a dig at Apple or Steve Jobs, it wasn't. When Jobs took over as CEO, he had a company that was on the verge of bankruptcy; it's position in the computer market was one of irrelevancy. The way the company was turned around and became the massively-profitable company it is today was amazing. And Steve Jobs, no doubt, deserves a lot of credit for his part in that turn-around. He wasn't an engineer, but he was a businessman and a bit of a showman. He used those attributes to create the Apple of today.

Damned Spinners!

I have one HDD left in the computer, which will be replaced Monday if the new terabyte SSD shows up. In the meantime, I am sorting the archive drives. All spinners, some ten years old. I have become spoiled by the SSDs I am using and it's driving me nuts watching these files being moved at less than a tenth the speed of the new technology drives.

Problems of the first world, as NoCo might say.

I don't know. I'm running under two TB internal on the new machine. Bit I have lots of external drives, as well as drives in the old XP machine (3 TB, I think) and drives in a couple of old NT work stations and a server that haven't been fired up in some time.

Actually, the phone has never been wet, never been dropped, never been sat on or chewed on. I learned long ago to be careful with fragile items.

Once again, the charge indicator jumped from 3% to 41% when I plugged it in. So I downloaded a couple of battery-info programs. Bad news.

Apple wrote:
A properly maintained iPhone battery is designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity at 400 full charge and discharge cycles.

Apparently that's not always the case. Both of the programs I ran show the battery to have gone through only 187 cycles, which sounds about right. They also both show the current capacity of the battery to be 731 mAh - 51% of new. Using some complex algorithms based on differential calculus and giraffe-based trigonometry, I have determined that 187 cycles is less than 400 and 51 percent is less than 80.

I charged the phone to 100% according to the charge-level indicator.
I checked the current power capacity on the two programs and one shows it at 567 mAh and the other shows it at 681. I'm guessing it's time to replace the damned battery.

I decided to replace the battery in my iPhone, even though Apple says that's a no-no.
Got a new battery along with a couple of screwdrivers and two replacement screws.
That's when it got scary. I have enough trouble with the little screws that hold the drives in the cabinet. But these are ridiculous.

Here's a pic of the two screws and yes, that is a toothpick. The screws are actually smaller than they appear in this pic. I may be in trouble.

The new battery shows 99% of design battery power: 1410 mAh compared to 1430 design.
I'm satisfied with that,

The screws in the above pic are huge compared to the ones on the inside. The sizes are 1.5 and 1.7 mm length with a 1 mm thread. Doesn't sound bad until you convert to inches. The longest screw is 0.067 and the thread is 0.04. Tiny bastards.

The tiny hands might be beneficial, but I'm afraid the tiny brain would be a hindrance.
