Several times longer than a stand alone player? Yikes. The load time on a standard player is the format's greatest weakness IMO so making it longer is not an advantage in my book.

No, I said "several times as long." (just a little note from your syntax police)

It certainly is not an advantage in anyone's book and is the reason for my criticism of the drive. It may be the drive that I bought, which is also a 16X burner. But if one is not in a hurry, it's okay. I suspect that stand-alone players do the decrypting in hardware rather than in software, which might explain part of it. But that's just a guess.

Sorry about that. I just couldn't help myself.

Over the past few years, it seems to have become common to use the wrong syntax in stating relationships. The English language is difficult enough without inserting more ambiguity. For example, one I heard recently was, "...nine times bigger than the sun." Does that mean the object is ten times the size of the sun or nine times the size? You can guess at what it means to you, but you cannot be certain what the writer meant.

How do you get "10x" from "nine times bigger"?  Are you ADDING the nine additional suns to the original?  That's just semantically crazy -- like saying "Joey is nine times older than Sue" and Sue is one so Joey must be ten?

In the new era of Trumpisms, that's bigly wrong.

And therein lies the problem. "As big as" doesn't mean the same as "bigger than."
So "ten times as big as" doesn't mean the same as "ten times bigger than." Or does it?

Jack is "ten times bigger than" Jill.  Jill weighs 100 pounds.  Therefore Jack is ten times that, or one thousand pounds.

Jack is "ten times as big as" Jill.  Jill is as big as 100 pounds.  Jack's still a tubber.

Nope, same meaning.

And there is the ambiguity I mentioned. Many disagree with you. The phrasing, like many in the language, has become acceptable only because of its wide usage, not because of its correctness.

Jack weighs 100 pounds. Jill weighs 100 pounds.

Jack is one times bigger than Jill.

Really?
That's an acceptable construction according to your example.

Consider a math example of the other way to interpret the phrase:
"A is four times larger than B."
Alternatively: "A is larger than B by a factor of four."
therefore:
A = B + 4B
A = 5B

Now you don't have to agree with that, but it illustrates what many consider the correct usage.

It's the ambiguity - the disagreement of meaning - that I see as the problem. If a phrase such as "ten times the size of" is used, there is no ambiguity.

You're tilting at windmills. NOBODY would derive 5B from that.

No, you wouldn't, but there are - and I hope you're sitting down - other people in the world besides you. And sometimes, they have the nerve to disagree with you.

In what way?

I base my beliefs on evidence and logic. I consider facts to be indicators of the one and only reality. I trust no statement unless it can be independently verified. I do not believe that saying something aloud three times automatically makes it true.

Nope.  Jack is not "bigger than Jill" at all, he's the same size as Jill.

You might have had a glimmer of an argument if you had said "Jack weighs 200 pounds and Jill weighs 100 pounds, therefore Jack is one times bigger than Jill" but that is a very clumsy phrasing that nobody with a care about clarity would make.  They'd say "Jack is twice Jill's weight" or "Jack is Jill plus Jill" or something that isn't bone-headedly ambiguous.

In the way that you never consider the veracity of a position that you do not hold. You apparently do not research alternative positions and you insult and demean anyone who does not agree with you. Very Trumpish.

Nope.  Jack is not "bigger than Jill" at all, he's the same size as Jill.

I wrote that sentence as an illustration of the ambiguity of your sentence: Jack is "ten times bigger than" Jill.  Jill weighs 100 pounds.  Therefore Jack is ten times that, or one thousand pounds.

If your sentence construction can be used for "ten times," then it should be equally as valid when written as "one times." Grammar does not change with the multiplier. Yes, the sentence is clumsy, but that was the point I was trying to make.

I was not intending to start an argument over which syntax is correct, but simply to show the ambiguity in the construct. You, however, refuse to acknowledge the ambiguity, only to claim that you are correct - as always - and everyone else is a moron.

You're more Trumpish than me. Apparently, to you, all viewpoints are equally valid, whether supported by the facts or not. You demand "equal time for alternate positions" so apparently you would teach creationism in public schools, you would have students read material on how the WTC towers were a controlled demolition, Hitler didn't persecute the Jews, and so-called "climate change" is a librul plot to wreck the US economy.

What a curious world you live in. If I've told you once I've told you ten times, it doesn't work that way.

Still messing with the BluRay player. The add-on program I was using for VLC has timed out. It is the "free" version of the program, but apparently only free for a while. They want over a hundred dollars for the version that won't quit. Fuck 'em.

I looked around and found a free (let's hope it stays free) BluRay program from Leawo. Not the best interface in the world, but it works. Doesn't require any add-ons for accessing the codes. I timed this one, and it took four minutes from disk insertion to start of play (slightly faster than with VLC). That was a disk with several episodes of a program on it. I tried it with a disk that contained one movie (and the additional crap). That disk only took two minutes before starting play.

Still not ready for prime time, but getting better.

I went over to a friend's house today to determine why the sound on his home theater sound system stopped working.

Cats.

Cats with itchy gums, apparently. I put some of this around his new wires.
