If I was a judge I'd declare this entrapment, and invalidate the charges. You can't both CREATE the crime and prosecute people for participating. |

| Your Mac is not malware-proof: a look at the threats and defenses - Quote :

Windows may be targeted more often, but if you’re the Mac user who gets victimized by tainted code, the tally doesn’t matter. For Mac users, the important thing is to raise awareness of the threats they face and explain what they can do about it.

| Macs are at least as vulnerable as Windows boxes. About a year ago, I read an article which was the product of interviews with about forty computer security experts. A majority of them used Apple computers and many provided them for their families. But they all said that the Apple OS was more vulnerable than Windows boxes, noting especially the Safari browser. All of those interviewed used anti-malware software, including the Apple users.
Most serious malware-related problems are caused by the actions of uninformed users, not any specific operating system.

| I am seriously unhappy with AT&T. When we moved into this house, the only internet service was dial-up (but that was the norm then). Damned service was so bad that it was below fax speed. I had a large antenna installed on the house and subscribed to a local 1Mbs service. It was okay, but not dependable. Seven years later (AT&T said it was going to be two years), DSL became available. I subscribed to a 4Mbs service ($40/month), which was all they offered here. It seldom came anywhere near 4Mb, and there were numerous service calls which all resulted in finding the problem was on AT&T's end. Then they offered a 6Mbs service (for $50/month) and I jumped on that. Fucking scam. The 4 and 6Mbs services often ran under 100Kb.
This morning, I downloaded some files which should have taken about thirty minutes (probably would have taken NoCo about thirty seconds). It took well over five hours. Complaining to AT&T does no good. They are going to do away with DSL in a couple of years and don't give a damn about the service. I have a land line with AT&T (that has more than doubled in cost in the past few years) that I would like to get rid of, but have learned on the AT&T users forum that if you disconnect your land line, they will also disconnect your DSL - even when you tell them that you want to keep it. Then when you call and complain about their error, they say they are no ports available and you can't get your DLS reconnected. AT&T offers no other internet service at my address. Nor does anyone else, except satellite, which is abysmal.
My old iPhone would download data at 2.25Mbs. I just tested my Samsung, using the same FCC speed test, and it downloaded at 80Mbs. If not for the small data allowance and the incredibly high cost of adding data to the plan, I would conduct all my internet service with the Samsung. There's also the problem of other devices in the house that depend on the wi-fi. I guess I should learn a little more about using the Samsung as a hot spot. Could work. Of course, ther's always the option of saying "fuck it" to the internet.
I fucking hate AT&T! Ernestine was right.

| Ran a speed test of the AT&T DSL connection and got 2.4 Mb/s download and 0.57 Mb/s upload. Disconnected the LAN and tested with the phone as a hot spot. Got 29 Mb/s download and 6.4 Mb/s upload. Gotta consider my options.

| As long as you don't exceed some kind of data download limitations without a surcharge, the choice looks pretty clear. |

| There is a limit on data - 4GB, shared by our two phones. Costs big bucks when you exceed it.
There's also the question of convenience. I think I will just use the phone as a standby for when the DSL is out or really crappy.

| No, most of the time it's just normal crappy. It's only really crappy maybe forty percent of the time.
Gad, I remember how happy I was with my first 2400 baud modem. What a speed demon.

| I think every email service should provide a simple-to-use whitelist-only option. Only those email addresses which you manually enter will be delivered. Everything else will be moved to a spam folder, or deleted immediately. For some reason, this is not available on gmail or yahoo. Not sure about outlook.

| Don't worry. Pretty soon under President Trump's new FCC chairman Ajit Pai, your e-mail address will be sold regularly and often to every spammer out there, and THEY will get premium treatment. You, on the other hand, will be lucky if you can send or receive anything but their spam. So quit your moaning. |

| What the new administration will do is just more reason for a white list on email programs. And it can be done easily, if the producers of he programs want to spend a couple of hours doing it,

This situation came up this morning. I normally download and watch Bill Maher's program every Saturday morning. This morning, the DSL was unbelievably (but not for me) crappy. The client indicated it was going to take five hours to download the files. The download speed was getting as low as 2KB/s. So I disconnected the cable to the router and fired up the phone. The files were downloaded in less than one minute. And AT&T has the nerve to make me give them money for their service. |

| This week my 2Tb external drive that I use for backing up (TimeMachine, incremental, background) starting throwing errors about being full. It only showed 35.1Gb free, which wasn't enough to run a backup (!)
So I looked into the drive, and over the past couple of years (April 2015) I have thrown a lot of shit on there that isn't related to backups: photos, movies, documents, music, etc. I decided to dedicate this drive to backups, and move everything non-backup-related to other drives.
It took a couple days.
Now I'm deleting 3.9 million files from it, which will take over an hour. Jesus Xacto! |

| That's a lot of files. I have a total of 213,840 files on three internal drives. I have no idea how many files I have on archive drives. But nowhere near four million.
I use a 3TB Seagate Barracuda drive for backups. I love the Barracuda drives. I was at Seagate when it was introduced and I've had dozens of them without a single failure. It's an internal drive and I use an sata/usb adapter. Takes about thirty seconds to get the drive out of its box and plug it in.
Every afternoon, a backup of a set of data runs and backs up the files to an internal drive. Every Friday, I plug in the Barracuda and back up all three internal drives. Nothing goes on the backup drive except the backup files. I have about a dozen spare hard drives and I use a few of them for archival purposes. Others have spare operating systems in case of a failure. Occasionally, I will make a clone of the system drive.
I use a differential backup, rather than incremental. There is less chance of losing data when old backup files are deleted or get corrupted.

| I can't even imagine having that many files. There isn't that much important information in the world. Granted, when I was working, I had hundreds of thousands of source code and related files, but never millions. |
