I happened across these enormous 50-inch windchimes in a local store recently and fell in love with their GORGEOUS dulcet tones.  They're individually tuned to real scales, so they sound like musical instruments, not clanging pipes.  I really really want a set but Mrs NoCo says nogo on the $300 cost.

Heavy sigh.

As you know, I bought a set after two years of coveting. You only live once, and she’s not the boss of me, and we can afford it, and a thing of beauty is a joy forever.

So I’ve enjoyed them for a couple years now. Very elegant.

But I’ve noticed something odd. In low wind conditions, like today, only one pipe, the lowest, gets struck. It’s always the low pipe.

I’ve tried turning the windchimes on their hook. I’ve tried rotating the hook.

Always the low pipe.

It LOOKS as if all pipes are the same distance from the clapper, and they’re all the same diameter — just different lengths. The paddle hanging off the clapper swings freely in the wind, does not face the same way all the time.

So what is it? Gravity?

Intriguing question. What, precisely, do you mean by "Gets stuck"?

Missing an 'r' in that.  Supposed to be "gets struck."

Wait.  I spelt it rite.  You misread it. Laughing

That's the kind of debugging puzzle that I quite enjoyed, both in software and hardware.
It's also, unfortunately, the kind that cannot be easily done long distance.
Of course, if you could provide a lengthy description, maybe with some pics, we could moan about it briefly.

Still gorgeous, still dulcet, still mostly sounding on one pipe.

From that picture, they do NOT all appear to be the same distance from the clapper.

Let the brief moaning begin.

Starting with, you may want to straighten out some of those strings so the topmost part is level.

Or re-string it altogether, as I have done.

The weather takes a certain 'toll'.

Good moanin’ to you too.

That pic was taken in a tiny wind and the clapper was tending toward the big pipe, as it does. In still air it’s equidistant.

The topmost part *is* level. The angle of the picture is deceiving. No restringing necessary (yet).

But you know what?  The big pipe is my favorite anyway so I’m not motivated to change anything.
