At first glance, you might think this is just a dig at Republicans in general and Trump in particular. But as I started to think about things, I began to think that maybe she has a point.

That's certainly a possibility, but I don't see any change in his personality from previous times he has been in the public eye. Wouldn't a noticeable personality change be expected in he was suffering from early-onset dementia?

Good point Howard.  Trump's gaffes and evasions and prevarications and ungrammatical statements don't sound like Alzheimer's to me.

Trump has been diagnosed and explained any number of times -- he's a narcissist who desperately needs attention and approval to maintain his composure.  He constantly talks about how much people love him, and how smart he is... When all evidence is to the contrary.

However the article did have one absolutely stellar sentence that deserves to be engraved on a plaque:
Quote :
At times it can be very hard to distinguish between extreme right-wing politics and symptoms of dementia.

There are various types of dementia. I wasn't thinking about Alzheimer's, more along the lines of mad cow. Cool

Did you read this letter, supposedly from his doctor? How bizarre. His PSA test results were mentioned. That's just odd.

I would guess that PSA was mentioned because of Trump's insecurity about things sexual. (Not that it means anything, but neither does penis size, and we know he's worried about that.)

I would also guess that Trump dictated the letter.

The letter certainly reads as if Trump wrote it. What an asshole that man is. And there are millions of people in the country who would like to see him as President. Fucking amazing.

I think, more accurately, you could say "There are millions of people in the country who recognize Trump from The Apprentice. They would like to see him on TV again."

I'm sure that's true in many cases, and that wouldn't be cause for concern. But the fact that so many people like what he is saying (even though it's often nonsensical) and are voting for him is quite disturbing. I'm not concerned about Trump becoming President, but I am deeply concerned about the effect he may have on future elections and the type of people who will follow in his footsteps.

No, only once. Which is bad enough, of course.

I think technically he was elected twice. He only won one election.

He was elected once by SCOTUS and once by people.

He was appointed by SCOTUS, and elected once.

Didn't SCOTUS take a vote on it? (In a manner of speaking.)

He was given the office.  Hence he was elected... by SCOTUS, not the people ('The People').
Quote :
The Court steps in

The Supreme Court actually interposed itself into the election contest three times. Only the last two are known as Bush v. Gore. In the first of these cases, Bush v. Palm Beach County Canvassing Board, the Court hoped to end the election crisis by putting a stop to the Florida Supreme Court's decision to extend the time for certifying the vote past the period set by state law. But by the time the Court began hearing arguments in the appeal on December 1, the certification had already occurred. The embarrassed justices sent the case back down to the Florida Supreme Court, instructing the lower court to rewrite its opinion so that it would not create a conflict between state and federal law.

A week later, the Florida Supreme Court ordered a statewide recount of ballots. Unlike its earlier decision, however, this one was not unanimous. With the Florida justices split 4-3, the U.S. Supreme Court once again exercised its discretionary appellate review jurisdiction and granted certiorari, or review, to Bush v. Gore. The day after the Florida Supreme Court had ordered a recount, the U.S. Supreme Court granted a temporary stay, or delay, in enforcing the Florida Supreme Court's order. The U.S. Supreme Court justices, too, were narrowly divided, 5-4. The five justices voting in favor of the stay were the same five conservatives who had been moving the Rehnquist Court to the right for more than a decade. The first hearing of Bush v. Gore telegraphed to the nation what would happen if the Court took further action in the case.

The Court's third and final intervention in the 2000 presidential election came just days later. In its unsigned opinion, the Court explained that it had voted 5-4 to put a stop to the Florida recount. Allowing the recount to go forward, the Court said, would violate the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. The U.S. Supreme Court sent the case back down to the Florida Supreme Court, which had no alternative but to dismiss it. The presidential election of 2000 had been decided, in essence, by the vote of one Supreme Court justice.

Technically, SCOTUS voted on a point of law, not on whether he won the election. In practice, that was the end result. So I think it is fair to say that they didn't vote for him, they appointed him.

Okay, you're probably right. It was a fucking mess either way, and people should have been shot.
