Un-democratic to be sure.

The electoral college needs to be done away with and the President elected by popular vote. But for this to be efficacious, the state-controlled elections must all be brought under a single umbrella of election standards. Otherwise, we will still be at the mercy of the Republican-mandated voter suppression movement.

Chris Hayes just had Curly Haugland on his show.  Apparently, after the debacle of a fight between Reagan delegates and Ford delegates at the 1976 convention, in 1980 the GOP changed their convention delegate rules so that they are "unbound."  This means they are NOT OBLIGATED to vote for the winner of the primary in their state, if they don't wanna.

Therefore... even if Trump "wins" the requisite 1237 delegates before the convention to theoretically clinch the nomination, his delegates are free to vote for anybody they like.

Speculation is, despite what a nuclear option this would be, it may be set up this way in this year's convention.  The Republican Party is melting down into a gooey puddle of whimpering and recriminations.

The big money donors are soiling their Depends.

According to Rachell Maddow, the Democratic Convention may be contested as well.  Going into this process Hillary held 467 super delegates (to Bernie's 26).  But super delegates are not BOUND to vote for the candidate to whom they are pre-promised, not after the first ballot.  Apparently they can change their votes at the convention.
Quote :
At the end of the night, Hillary Clinton increased her delegate lead by about 100, still leaving Sanders plenty of room to eliminate her advantage in the 24 remaining states. A candidate needs 2,383 delegates to clinch the Democratic nomination, and as of March 16, Clinton only has 1,139 delegates to Sanders’ 825. Less than half of the pledged delegates have been selected to date.
With Sanders doing better than expected, winning more states than projected and losing by smaller margins in the states where he does not win, he has an option to approach the super delegates about changing their allegiance.

We could see major movement.

The next 24 states are mostly winner-take-all, mostly Northern, mostly liberal and could reverse Hillary's momentum.  This thing is not over yet.
