Larry Ward, founder of Gun Appreciation Day, wrote:
"I believe Gun Appreciation Day honors the legacy of Dr. King. I think Martin Luther King, Jr. would agree with me if he were alive today that if African Americans had been given the right to keep and bear arms from day one of the country's founding, perhaps slavery might not have been a chapter in our history."
If Dr. King were still alive today, he'd be 84 years old and he very well might have an entirely different view of gun violence. Hard to say.
The Atlantic wrote:
Meanwhile, on Monday, five people were shot on New Orleans's MLK bolouvard following a pardade honrring martin Luther Kings Birthday. According to the New Orleans Times-Picayune, New Orleans police chief Ronal W. Serpas had this to say: "It's the state of affairs in our nation that young men do not heed the words of Martin Luther King Jr."
Somebody got a little excited writing that.

I saw a clip on TV news of Ward making that ridiculous remark. But he did have a valid point: If the slaves had all been given guns, things certainly would have been different. What a moron.

Ward is incredibly irony-impaired.

That's like saying President Kennedy would be an excellent spokesman for Lincoln convertibles if he were alive today. The Columbia astronauts would be talking up the safety of the shuttle program if they were alive today. All of the teens killed by guns in America would agree that guns prevent violence -- if they were alive today.
