This is only difficult to understand if you assume that all people are intelligent, educated, informed, and rational.

Why doesn't "baked" rhyme with "naked"?

What's with the phrase, "a crashing bore"? Crashes aren't boring, nor is a bore likely to crash. "Crashing boar" would make more sense -- but that's not how it's used.

English is a bizarre language. Pronunciation often depends on what part of the speech the word is, as you show here.

What gets me is why the past tense of words varies. "Bake" and "make" are both present tense, but the past tense of "make" is "made." Why isn't it "maked"?

Because one is horizontal and the other is vertical. Typical application of geometric spelling rules. Duh. Rolling Eyes

Why, when you sell a house or a piece of property, does not only the SELLER's AGENT's commission but also the BUYER's AGENT's commission come out of your proceeds?

Only the seller pays a commission. That's just the way it is.

You don't pay the buyer's agent. You pay the seller's agent and that agent's company pays the buyer's agent's company. There is no such thing as "buyer's commission." That's just the way the business is done. When you bought the new house, you didn't pay a buyer's commission, did you?

No, but we didnt use an agent.

Buyers agent commission was a line item on the settlement document. I know "that's the way it's done" but it still makes no sense.

Real estate laws vary from state to state. And the issue of Procuring Cause in determining agent compensation and seller/buyer liability is very confusing.

Buyers agent commission may have been a line item on the settlement document, but that line doesn't indicate where the commission came from or that the buyer was responsible for paying that commission. The buyer's agent always gets a commission (unless she is working for a broker for salary). Typically, the commission comes from the seller's proceeds and the buyer's agent gets a cut of that through the broker for whom she works.

Yes, I know that's how it works. Yes I know, that's where the money is.

But it don't seem right.

The buyer pays everything no matter how it's split up. The seller will consider the commission cost in setting the house price. What difference does it make if the commission is split into two parts? The buyer still pays all of it.

GM doesn't make their own clocks.

It's an off-the-shelf clock movement.

It's part of the radio/CD player.
I don't care who makes it, I just can't see a reason for AM/PM on a car clock.

I don't understand how they manage to get programs so fucking huge. I know that the new languages, compilers and programming tools lead to great inefficiency. But I can't figure out exactly what is contained in these massive programs.

I download a new version of the backup program I am using. It was over 250 megabytes. The company I retired from was the industry leader in enterprise-level backup software. We created the Disk Manager and System Restore for Windows. We wrote the early version of Windows Backup. Our backup software was used by many Fortune 500 companies. I know what is required for backup software. We used to deliver the backup program on a few floppy disks - and this was not a simple program for a single computer; it was a client/server system. When CDs became available, we delivered the program on one CD (DVDs didn't yet exist).

So what the hell are the programmers and architects doing today that results in programs five to ten times as large as they need to be to provide the same functionality.

I am old. I am a curmudgeon. Deal with it.
