PostSubject: Things I don't understand   Thu Jun 13, 2013 7:50 am

Just about every smartphone or notepad I see on the bus has a cover of some sort. Often there's a clear plastic over the screen. Apple spent millions of dollars making the products thin and durable, and consumers in this country bulk them up with extraneous plastic cases.

That wasn't true in Amsterdam. Most of the iPhones -- and 99% of the phones I saw were iPhones -- and 90% of those were white -- most of the iPhones were naked.

As god made them.

"Bulk them up"? Well, let me get out my calipers.
...
...
Okay. Let's see...The case I have adds 0.25 inches to the length, 0.22 inches to the width, and 0.175 inches to the depth. Doesn't seem too bulky; let's check the weight. Oh My God! it's 9/10 of an ounce heavier!

Seems to me that the extra bulk wouldn't be noticed by any creature larger than a gerbil.

Enough fun. I'm sure the case does add a little extra protection. How much? Who the hell knows? I'm not inclined to run drop tests to find out.

"Apple spent millions making the products thin and durable"; I spent eighteen bucks adding a little additional durability (accident insurance). Seems cheap enough.

I find that the case makes the device much easier to handle. I prefer the grip of the case far more than I do the slick metal. But that's just the opinion of a man who still likes horn-loaded speakers.

The word is spelled troglodyte.

All of us trogs know that.

I actually like the grip too.

And in the end it doesn't matter if you don't get why people do it. You don't have to do what they are doing, do you? I got an Otterbox for my Nexxus tablet because I know me. And what's the first thing I did when I got it? Got caught out in a storm. The thing would have been soaked without the case. And I'd never have the money for another.

  • People who claim vinyl records sound better than CDs
  • People who say Obama is the worst president ever
  • People who swear tubes sound better than transistors
  • People who think cutting taxes helps the economy
  • People who assume god won't let anything bad happen to the country
  • People who pronounce "ask" as "axe" -- I've even seen this on TV
  • Bob Dylan's appeal
  • Why the country isn't outraged over our current "do-nothing" Congress

NoCo,

You could simplify that and just say, "people."
Then I could follow that with a post that says, "ditto."

The WoD is actually pretty easy to understand.

There were a lot of amateurs making money in the production and distribution of controlled substances. Nancy and Ronnie wanted to make sure nobody but Organized Crime was in that business, while boosting both production and consumption. They succeeeded famously.

Why are The Three Musketeers always shown using swords -- rather than muskets?

Nixon started the WoD.
It just got a lot more press during Reagan's administration thanks to Ollie and the boys.

Things I don't understand

Quantum physics (please tell me somewhere, in some universe, there's a version of me that got it all right)
people who are against abortion but won't fund childhood education
people who drop off old senior dogs at shelters
people who stop at the entrance to the strip mall even though they don't have a stop sign
people who stand and talk in doorways

Good point, Jenni.
I was looking at pets available at the local animal shelter and they had a Siamese cat that was listed as being 16 years 8 months old. To know the age, the cat would have had to have been brought in by its owner (other animals are mostly just listed as "young" or "adult"). It caught my attention, because that's almost the exact age my Siamese was when I had to have her put down. I think the asshole owner just didn't want to pay for the cost of euthanasia, so dropped the poor old cat off at the pound. Probably the same with the old dogs.

To me it's the ultimate in bad character. Something has served you well, been at your side, been your companion for so long and then at the end when it may be hard you just walk away. TO me that person is trash. It's physical proof that they are the lowest of the low.

I'm not much more positive on people who do it with the elderly. That's one promise I made Nana, that I would never, ever dump her in a home.

It also disgusts me because I feel like this is exactly what society is for, to care for those too old or too young to do for themselves.

Some of the people I work with do not have the same relationship to their dogs as I do. They're not family members. They're like furniture or something. Hunting dogs especially.

Some not even allowed inside the house.

This is of course foreign to me.

Yeah, I know those people. And I hope they enjoy their life with no soul. Evil or Very Mad

Dogs are people too. Dogs chose us, they helped us get where we are. They deserve to be part of the family or not there at all.
Around here we have a lot of people who like to tie a dog on a chain in the yard, like they're a lawn accessory. I carry snips in the car. If I see a dog in bad shape I will and have absolutely cut a chain and taken a dog for treatment and rehoming. The one time I was caught I paid the guy 30 bucks for the dog. The receipt he signed and a pic of the dog's neck was all the cop needed to charge him with abuse. But mostly the assholes get away with it.

The lady I bought Chloe from- this was back when I didn't understand people saw dogs as income- had a schnauzer she offered me. Great dog, didn't even have a name. They left him outside like he wasn't even theirs. It was all I could do to claim my puppy and get out of there without incident. If I'd have had the money I'd have bought every dog she had and told her what I thought of her. I cried the two hours back up to Jackson. That bitch was a big awakening for me. That's when I started the fostering and rescue stuff.

Why is the thing you use to drive screws called a screwdriver, but the thing you use to drive nails is called a hammer?
