Yesmen Always Say Yes Empty
PostSubject: Yesmen Always Say Yes   Yesmen Always Say Yes EmptyWed Feb 17, 2016 6:45 pm

MSNBC just had a town hall with Donald Trump, asking him (or attempting to) some tough questions .  Of course he kept interrupting and changing the subject by answering questions that weren't asked, repeating his stock talking points. He repeats himself constantly, and ignores anything that doesn't feed into what he wants to say.

Which made me think.

He's a multi-zillionaire, who has surrounded himself with syncophants.  He probably never has anyone say "no" to him.

So... he tends to go talking his head off about stuff, while having no interest in hearing other people's opinions.  He doesn't entertain the thought that he may be wrong, or that other people may have better ideas.

He "fires" people who disagree with him.

The moderators were trying to ask him specific details about some of his sweeping plans -- "I'm gonna make America great again!  I'm gonna boost the military while saving money!  I'm gonna repeal Obamacare and create a new system that's cheaper and better!  I'm gonna get China and Saudi Arabia to pay for..."

You get the idea.

But Trump really thinks he can do all this.   He thinks China and Galaxo-Kline and Lockheed and Congress will just say "yes" when he tells them what to do.

He has no clue.

And he would MELT DOWN if they didn't.

PostSubject: Re: Yesmen Always Say Yes   Yesmen Always Say Yes EmptyThu Feb 18, 2016 9:52 am

I remember during the Bush senior presidency, with the economy going to hell there were more and more homeless people appearing on the streets of NYC. At the same time, "read my lips" was denying there was a problem with the economy. One Saturday morning, I had to go to work, so I was leaving the subway at the World Trade Center to transfer to the PATH train to New Jersey. As usual on cold days, there were numerous homeless people who had been sleeping down there, because it was warmer and safer than the sidewalk. That morning, cops were in action, moving the homeless along. Very gently, but firmly, "you can't stay here, buddy. The president's coming through here".

It occurred to me that it was no wonder Bush didn't think there was a homelessness problem. He never got to see any homeless people.

I think this is a problem with all these 1% types. They don't live in the same world as the rest of us.

I've never understood why anyone would ever consider Trump, or anyone of his background, as being qualified for the office. Government is not business: it has different goals (or should have) and therefore requires a different approach in administration.
But qualified or not, Trump is just an asshole.

Someone very wise once said, "Being an asshole doesn't disqualify anyone from being president."

Very true. Trump is not qualified in any case. He could be the nicest guy in the world and he still wouldn't be qualified. Being an asshole is just gravy.

i can sorta understand the appeal of Trump, or Ross Perot before him who was cut of the same cloth.

Outside of politics.  Unfiltered.  Honest.  Rough edges, real.  A proven record of success.  Not overly polished, not wishy washy.

Granted that doesn't qualify one to be president, but in a field of wishy washy overly polished dishonest politicians, he's a breath of fresh air.

I like Trump, or rather I like what he represents. I liked Ross Perot, too. Both are willing to call a spade a spade, both shake up the presidential race by saying what everybody thinks but nobody will say out loud.

Bush didn't keep us safe on 9/11.

Jeb is a pussy.

Cruz is a dickwad.

China is manipulating the US.

But LIKING his honesty is not the same as wanting him to win. No, for all the reasons we've laid out a Trump presidency would be a "move to Cape Breton" moment. But I'm glad he's in the race. He makes an otherwise dull-as-compost election a neverending path of discovery.

Honesty is not a quality I would ever ascribe to Trump.

Maybe the word "honesty" implies some considered intention that isn't there.

Trump is more like a child, who says what's on his mind without considering it first. He's impulsive. He's guileless. He speaks like a child.

Is that better?

More accurate. You could have just gone with "dishonest."

"Dishonest" implies he knows the difference.

He knows the difference. It's just not important to him.

Digby expresses it clearly.
Quote :
The chattering classes like to say “the GOP base is frustrated because conservative leaders let them down so they are turning to Trump as a protest.” This misses the point. They did let them down but not because they didn’t fulfill the evangelical/small government/strong military agenda. They let them down because they didn’t fulfill the dogwhistle agenda, which was always about white resentment and authoritarian dominance. Trump is the first person to come along and explicitly say what they really want and promise to give it to them.

No more beating around the Bush (no pun intended), Trump comes right out and says it.  It turns out that the three legged stool of the GOP (small government, traditional values, strong military) is just a pile of wood. Donald Trump has poured gasoline on it and lit it on fire. And a good number of GOP voters are whirling and dancing around it in ecstasy. They didn’t care about ideology. They just wanted to feel some heat.

The three legs of the conservative base are:

  • I want to keep my money, all of it, all of the time.  It's MY money, mine, mine, mine!
  • I don't want any poor people getting anything for free. If they're poor it's their own fault.
  • I want my guns/religion/prejudice/polluting/etc. to be unchallenged all the time.  Freedom means never having to say you're sorry.
