Julie Delpy is a writer/director as well as an actor, and she's done a couple movies that are sorta in the same universe as the "Before" movies.
In the first one (2007) she's a French woman living in New York with her Jewish boyfriend Jack. They visit Paris, to pick up her cat, to introduce him to her family, and as a chance for her to catch up on the old neighborhood. He's a hypochondriac who is totally out of his element in Paris, and over the span of two days he meets several of Marion's ex-lovers and becomes convinced she's slept with half of Paris. It's a hilarious comedy of language errors, and Delpy's real mom and dad play her parents (they're both professional actors, and very good). In the end Jack is totally flipped out.
The second one (2012) takes place five years later. Marion has had a child with Jack, then broken up with him. She's now living with a very supportive writer and radio personality played by Chris Rock, who brought along a young daughter of his own from a previous marriage. Their life together is wonderful for both of them.
Then Marion's family comes to visit, from France. Language difficulties ensue, cultural differences arise, Chris is flummoxed by these strange bizarre people who invade his home. He and Marion have a big fight amid many misunderstandings.
The films are warm, and human, and surprisingly self-deprecating for a film she wrote, directed and stars in. Her vision of what drives people crazy is pretty funny and realistic, and feels like it could really happen.
I enjoyed both movies a lot.
