I expect this will be the next wave of hi-fi - setting up your own "performance space" in your house, and having the speakers to put an audible hologram in it.

I can buy that a spherical cage of microphones might capture a 3-D image of the sound source -- if it fits inside the cage -- but you're not going to reproduce it with one of these:

You would AT LEAST need something along these lines:

You need the spherical array to reproduce the sound in every direction. The chair is the opposite of what you need - it is a reception point, not a point of origin.

The chair has surround sound built into it -- sorry, I wasn't clear about that.

BTW they sound fantastic.

Yes, they are nice chairs, but they have no connection to the matter addressed by the article. The transducers in the chair are directing sound to one point - the listener. The spherical array is directing sound from one point - the musician.

You need surround sound to reproduce the "surround mics" -- point-source speakers off in a corner somewhere aren't going to do it.  Assuming you're not going to sit in the original mic cage, and replace all the mics with speakers, a 360-degree surround sound environment like the Egg Chair would be a good substitute.

The article didn't mention "point-source speakers off in a corner." Nor did I.

The effect they are trying to reproduce is the creation of the sound and its dispersion in all directions. That has fuck all to do with "surround sound" or the listener. It is concerned only with the creation of the sound, not its absorption, which you are describing.
