Cleaning The Oven

Retirement is so much fun.

But not as much fun as hiring house cleaners.
Watching is so much fun.

We have a self-cleaning oven, which function we have never actually used and weren't sure quite how to. So when we had an appliance repairman in (to fix the dishwasher) we took the chance to ask him about "self-cleaning" the oven. He explained, and said we could use it if we wished. But his experience was that ovens tended to go toes-up in just two or three years if people kept using the "self-clean" feature. Maybe do that once a year, and clean it the old-fashioned way otherwise.

My understanding is that the self cleaning cycle takes the oven up to 900 or 1000 degrees, which scares the bejesus outta me. I usually hand clean it first, using an SOS pad and something like Simple Green, then start the cleaning cycle and let it get about halfway there just to burn off the Simple Green smell.

I never run a full cleaning cycle.
