PostSubject: Cultural imperialism   Fri Mar 15, 2013 3:59 am

As people will know I got into trouble for being involved in a play in Uganda that dealt with Ugandas negative attitude to homosexuality. Given that homophobia is gaining ground there (for whatever reason), I think that makes the topoc fair game, but while the cast (other than me) and the director were Ugandan, the writer was British and so was the director. My question is whether it is right for outsiders to comment a soiety in that way?

Note the play did not advocate or promote homosexuality (although it was accused of that). It was I think parodying the knee-jerk reactions people have in reaction to homosexuals. So what are acceptable limits to exporting cultural values?

I think it's good.

Mississippi would probably still be limiting the black vote if it weren't for interlopers into a culture they really did not belong in. I see both sides. I see why people are pissed when people come in and upset the order and say 'you need to change' but I also see that sometimes it takes someone not entrenched in that system to help dislodge it. I think others have every right to comment on another culture, state, whatever. People act like people are free to leave if they don't like a situation, but that's not modern life. We are serfs in a way, trapped in the country we are a citizen of. Gay Ugandans have no rights to enter a gay friendly country, they are citizens of Uganda. So we have to help make Uganda safe for them because they, like us, are just people who deserve to make their way through life. We are all just people we need the same shit; safety, food, water, shelter, perhaps some sense of belonging. Shame on people for not wanting to get involved because it isn't their situation. Refuse to get involved because of your beliefs, or because you can't afford to lose something but not because you think you have no right to. We all have a right to try to better things for each other.

If it was commenting on fatty foods, or sugary drinks, or a propensity to speak with a drawl I would call it "cultural imperialism." However condemning citizens to death because they are gay is not "cultural," not a regional preference, not a minor behavioral trait. This is life-and-death for the homosexual citizens of Uganda, and what makes it appallingly worse is this policy was suggested and fostered by the American evangelical right.

People of conscience must do whatever they can to overturn it. Uganda's gay citizens certainly don't have the power or influence to overturn it.

Basic human rights are all of our responsibility, in a civilized society. Bravo to you for being there.

Thanks for that word of support. I certainly think that we (I us doing the play) were not doing anything immoral. As I said were were not promoting homsexuality we were poking fun at homophobia. I think the ral cultural imperialists are the US evangelicals who are imposing their own bigoted views on a third world country - probably because thy have less hope of doing so at home.
