From a vinyl website:
Quote :
This is the opportunity to have the music on a much better and more reliable format such as vinyl. A Medium that can last for ages and a medium on which the music will not vanish after 20 years as it will on CD or Tape.
The CD is now 32 years old, and most of them have a projected lifespan of 100+ years -- whether played or not.

Both cassettes and LPs wear out.

Not sure what the projected lifespan of an LP is.  If stored properly and not played, maybe several decades?

I don't know how long a vinyl recording will last, but I have some that are more than fifty years old and they are still in fine shape. Harder to take care of than CDs, for sure.

There is some philosophical argument that lifespans over, say, 100 years might be irrelevant.

I also have some very old Laser Discs and S-VHS tapes that are still good.
For most of them, it's too much trouble to convert them to DVD (philosophically speaking, of course).

One problem with a 100+ year lifespan would be the replacement of the technology. Vinyl records have lasted quite a long time, but I seriously doubt that they will still be making CDs or DVDs in another fifty years.

Yes, I expect flash memory to take over. Maybe DNA memory. Maybe they'll invent a way to encode digital bits into water.

Flash memory, or something similar, seems to be the logical step up from the CD. The problem with flash is the production. Right now, the packaging for a CD is more expensive than the CD itself, even for small runs. Stamping out CDs is very fast and very cheap. Flash memory can't be stamped; they must be written and flash is very slow in writing.  Additionally, flash memory is only relatively cheap in very large memory sizes. I don't know if anyone even produces small (CD memory size) flash chips anymore. Maybe for older cameras.

The technology will always be way ahead of the ability of the recording industry to maintain huge profits from the medium.

Water? No. But peanut butter seems reasonable.

Peanut butter on celery is very reasonable.

And chunky peanut butter provides great bass response.
