I look on the bright side.

If mom had accidentally shot and killed the two year old, it would have been two lives ruined. As it is, only one was.

Yeah, but can you imagine having to grow up knowing you shot your mom? I mean the kid is bound to find out somehow. Quite the situation. Do you take him for counseling or try to hide it?

No guilt on the two year old's part. It wasn't him/her who was the stupid one.

It should be explained to him/her when he/she asks, but without prejudice. It was an accident caused by a very stupid mom, and she paid the price.
