I have seen the future. It's gonna go down like this.
Tomorrow Obama announces unilateral immigration reform by executive order, because Congress has been unable to act.
Although this is within his legal purview to take such action, the Republican-controlled Congress will declare a constitutional crisis and begin impeachment proceedings. 2015 and 2016 will be consumed with hearings and posturing, completely eclipsing any thoughts of actually governing. In this way Congress will elude responsibility for fixing the problems caused by their inaction of 2010-2014, while diverting attention from this fact (among the Fox News set) with fiery rhetoric about "preserving the Constitution."
In the 2016 elections the nation will be even more polarized than now, and in even worse shape by every measure.
With the nation divided, and the Democrats frustrated at every turn,
Bernie Sanders will run. This is a desperation move because Congress will still be in Republican hands, and Sanders will be mired in opposition just like Obama.
Sanders will try executive action too, around 2018, precipitating another "Constitutional crisis." At this point the government shutdown will occur, and it will last the remainder of Sanders' term. The 2020 elections will be, in effect, a new Constitutional Congress, designed to fix the permanently broken government.
Among the proposals:
* From the Republicans, the president will be *appointed* by Congress rather than directly elected
* From the Democrats, Congressional districts will be aligned with counties rather than gerrymandered
Who wins will depend on where the blame falls publicly for the nation's current sad state.
