Watched this excellent documentary on backup singers last night -- Darlene Love, Merry Clayton, several others the filmmakers spent time with. Some of them have had dreams of becoming solo artists, but mostly they admit they don't want the stress or loss of privacy that comes with it. The range of records these ladies have sung on is rather astonishing -- like The Wrecking Crew they turned up everywhere! They seemed mostly very funny and humble, more devoted to family and balance than a solo career would allow.
And my god, when they open their mouths! Those voices! Astonishing.
